Manic Maintenance
A downloadable game for Windows
Manic maintenance is a first person puzzle game set under a timer, set in a sci-fi universe. The art style and overall aesthetic was originally designed to be comedic sci-fi, similar to Rick & Morty or Futurama, where certain household items could exist in our world, yet are mixed with science fiction for the sake of comedic absurdity.
The Battleship was chosen to be the completed level to be shown in Manic Maintenance’s full release. It has enough content in it to last roughly 10-15 minutes for a person who knows where all the puzzles are, and for a person who is new to the game, roughly 30-60 minutes of gameplay.
The main environmental assets used in the game came from a “Sci-Fi Styled Modular Pack” Which included walls, floors, ceilings, as well as environmental models like desks, counters, chairs, computers and other devices. The main concern with the assets is a lot of them are themed after a blue orange and grey design, which can make the environments look a bit bland if plastered everywhere and can affect how easy it is to tell what tools each puzzle needs.
Unfortunately none of the planned in-game narrative was produced, this also means the planned “battle” scenario with bullets and shells whizzing past certain areas that the player had to dodge, and make their way across the map, could not be featured in the game.
However, the environmental storytelling of the different props and broken devices should be able to tell it’s own story for the player whom can tell that some sort of fight or struggle broke out in the ship, and now they are left in the wake of the destruction left to fix everything.
